HONOLULU — A deadly multi-car accident on Friday afternoon turned the Moanalua Freeway into a scene of tragedy, killing one man and sending five others to hospital.
The collision occurred around 12:30 p.m. on the eastbound Moanalua Freeway near Fort Shafter, just before the South King Street off-ramp.
Honolulu Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene, where authorities determined at least three to four vehicles were involved in the crash, with a total of seven people affected.
One man was pronounced dead at the scene. Another man and a woman were transported to the hospital in critical condition, while three other women suffered serious injuries requiring hospitalization. All five injured individuals remain under medical care.
The crash forced emergency crews to close one eastbound lane from Puuloa Road to the South King Street off-ramp for several hours, disrupting afternoon traffic for commuters. The lane was eventually reopened after cleanup operations concluded.
Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the accident. Investigators are working to identify whether speed, mechanical failure, or driver error contributed to the chain-reaction collision.
This incident marks another tragic traffic fatality on Oahu’s busy freeway system in 2026.
