A joyful family gathering meant to celebrate a father’s birthday ended in devastating tragedy after a head-on collision in Minnesota claimed five lives, including four members of the same family.

The incident occurred on the afternoon of March 20 along Highway 71 near 240th Street in Cottonwood County, according to state authorities.

Preliminary reports indicate that a 2016 GMC Terrain, driven by 67-year-old Martin Hanson, collided with a 2019 Ford Transit van carrying 13 passengers.

Hanson, who was alone in his vehicle, died at the scene. In the van, four passengers, 73-year-old Richard Johnson, his wife Kathleen Johnson, and their daughters Kelly Hargus, 49, and Lindsey Rossow, 47, also lost their lives.

The family had been traveling together to mark Richard Johnson’s birthday, turning what should have been a cherished occasion into an unimaginable loss.

Nine other passengers from the van survived but sustained injuries ranging from critical to minor.

Among them were twin sisters Kassandra Ambrose and Kristin Hanson, both 44, who are also daughters of the deceased couple.

A relative, Serena McCartney, described the victims as deeply loving individuals who created a strong sense of belonging for everyone around them.

Reflecting on her childhood, she recalled fond memories of family gatherings filled with laughter, warmth, and togetherness.

β€œThat family is what β€˜home’ means,” she said, emphasizing their welcoming and affectionate nature.

The aftermath has been especially difficult for survivors. Ambrose reportedly underwent a lengthy surgery and was placed in a coma but has since regained consciousness. Kristin Hanson suffered a broken arm.

McCartney expressed both grief and a small sense of comfort knowing the sisters are recovering together.

Adding to the family’s heartbreak, this is not their first encounter with tragedy. McCartney noted that the siblings had previously lost a brother, Eric Johnson, in a car accident in 2004.

Authorities confirmed that road conditions were dry and no alcohol involvement is suspected. However, the exact cause of the crash remains under investigation.

In response to the tragedy, multiple fundraising efforts have been launched to support survivors and grieving families.

As the community rallies around them, loved ones continue to grapple with an overwhelming loss that has left lasting emotional scars.
