There are a lot of people and families in New York State who are affected by domestic abuse. Laws have been made by the state to help and protect people.

The New York State Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence says that it happens when one person in a relationship controls the other by being abusive.

This law was made in 1994 in New York State. It is called the Domestic Violence Prevention Act. This law set up a full system to deal with violence in the home.

This meant that police, lawyers, and courts had to come up with plans and rules to help victims.

It also made sure that victims of domestic abuse had places to stay, access to counseling, and programs that taught people about the problem.

Experts say that to successfully fight domestic violence, it is important to use a variety of methods.

The National Domestic Violence Hotline states this involves raising awareness, aiding victims, holding abusers accountable, and promoting healthy relationships via education and protection.
